Halloween Mosaic Mask
By Ganev O’Grady

Ganev O’Grady worked in fashion for well-known designers in the UK, bringing to life their projects.  Her love of design began when she was a young child and created doll clothes.  Although Ganev also paints, draws, and sews, her current passion is mosaic art.  She promotes being environmental responsible through her art and encourages others to do the same. To see some of Ganev O’Grady’s mosaics, visit her Etsy shop, Retain Remake Renew.

ARTIST'S NOTES:
All the supplies that you will need can be found in your home. Use paper and cards that you would otherwise throw away or recycle. It is a good habit to recycle.  It saves you money and is good for the environment as well. Here’s a list of what you will need:

SUPPLIES:
1.        A large piece of card stock. You can use an old cereal box or other cardboard packaging that you have in the house.
2.       Scissors
3.       Pencil
4.       Black paint, non-toxic paint for children
5.       Paint brush
6.       Colorful paper, shiny if you have some. Silver foil or wrapping paper would be good.
7.       Non-toxic glue for children
8.       String

INSTRUCTIONS:
1.        Cut out a piece of card stock that will be big enough to cover your face.
2.      Paint it black.
3.        Let it dry.

4.  Draw these shapes on it and cut them out.
#4

Note:  To get your shape exactly right, you may want to draw them on another piece of card stock.  Then trace them on the black painted card.  Or, you may be real good at drawing shapes and can draw directly on the back of the card.

5. Cut out the nose area.

#5

6.   Use the small shape that you cut out in Step #4. Fold this shape like the one shown in the picture.
#6

7.  Place the shape in the nose area you cut out. Fold back the edges and stick them down.

8. Try on the mask and mark out the eye holes to where your eyes can see out, like in the photo.

9. Draw big circles around the eye holes and draw the mouth like this:

10. Cut out small triangular shapes from the shiny paper - first cut long strips then cut the triangles. You can reshape these to fit later when you piece together your mosaic.

11.  Begin to ‘mosaic’ your mask. Glue the colored pieces on the card leaving a small gap between each piece so that the black paint shows. This gives the effect of mosaic. You can mix all the colors together or use them separately in different areas of your mask, as I have done.

12.  Make some small holes roughly where the ears should be. Thread a piece of string from each of the small holes, put a knot at the end and tie the mask behind your head.

Boo!

Go scare your mum and dad or do some trick or treating!
